Alice Capsey has received a late call-up to join the England Women’s T20I squad for their upcoming tour of South Africa. She will replace an injured player after the team initially left her out due to a form slump with the bat. Capsey, who was playing for the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), has now left the team to join her England teammates in South Africa.
England officials stated that the recall was due to “a couple of minor injury concerns” within the squad, though they did not provide further details. The players participated in a light training session on Monday, with only a few “niggles” reported, but no major issues.
Capsey’s form had been a concern earlier this year, as she only managed to score 19 runs in three innings during the T20 World Cup, where England failed to progress to the knockout stages. However, her recent performances in the WBBL have been more promising, as she has scored 72 runs in eight innings and is currently the third-highest wicket-taker with 13 wickets at an impressive average of 13.23 and an economy rate of 7.21. Her best bowling performance in the WBBL came with a five-wicket haul against the Perth Scorchers.
Capsey and injured player Dani Gibson were the only members of the World Cup squad not included in the initial touring party. Paige Scholfield and Lauren Filer, who missed out on the World Cup, have also joined the squad. England will play three T20Is, three ODIs, and a Test during the tour, starting on November 24 in East London.
