Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has provided insight into his decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari, marking a significant shift in his illustrious career.
In a move that surprised the motorsport world, Hamilton announced on February 1st that he would be departing Mercedes, despite being under contract with the team until 2025. The exit was made possible by a clause in his contract, allowing the British driver to seek new opportunities at the end of the 2024 season. Hamilton, who is tied with Michael Schumacher for the most world championship titles in F1 history, will be joining Ferrari for the 2025 season.
Speaking about his motivation, Hamilton offered a straightforward yet heartfelt reason for his decision. In an interview with Matt Whyman, the author of Inside Mercedes F1: Life in the Fast Lane, Hamilton revealed, “It is every kid’s dream who gets involved in motor racing to race a Ferrari, and that is it. I did not want to get to the end of my career and look back and go, ‘What if?’”
Hamilton’s decision comes after an immensely successful stint with Mercedes, where he forged strong bonds with his engineers and team members, with whom he shared a deep personal connection. Whyman recounted a poignant moment when Hamilton was preparing for a pre-season bonding event with his Mercedes team: “He arrived and saw them all waiting to go in. He said he couldn’t get out of the car for 20 minutes. He was just so struck with, ‘What am I going to say to them after all of this time?’”
Despite the emotional difficulty of leaving a team he holds so dearly, Hamilton emphasized that his move was driven by the allure of Ferrari, a team that has long been a dream for many drivers. Whyman further noted that while Hamilton is often perceived as intensely focused, the decision was not just strategic—it was deeply human. “It’s Ferrari, and this is a guy who has done everything—this is the one thing he has not done,” Whyman added.
Hamilton’s shift to Ferrari will mark a new chapter in his legendary F1 career, and while he leaves behind a team with which he achieved unprecedented success, the allure of racing for Formula One’s most iconic and successful team was simply too great to pass up.
