Prithvi Shaw has received an early birthday gift as the Mumbai cricket team selected him for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024 squad. Following his omission from the initial Ranji Trophy lineup due to fitness and weight concerns, Shaw’s return highlights a fresh opportunity for him to reestablish himself in domestic cricket. The Mumbai selectors have named a 28-player probable squad for the upcoming T20 tournament, including stars such as Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane, with Rahane expected to captain the side.

Prithvi Shaw’s last T20 appearance was in the 2024 IPL season before he went on to play for Northamptonshire in England’s One-Day Cup and County Championship. His inclusion in the SMAT squad signals Mumbai’s confidence in his ability to bring his attacking style to their lineup. However, a notable omission is star all-rounder Tanush Kotian, which surprised fans given his past performances.
The selected players must report to the MCA Academy on November 9 to begin preparations. Placed in Group E, Mumbai will compete against teams like Goa, Services, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Nagaland as they work to build a strong game plan for the tournament.
The 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy kicks off on November 23, with matches running until the final on December 15. Mumbai’s lineup appears well-rounded, with the potential to make a deep run in the tournament. The team’s mix of experienced players like Rahane and Iyer alongside younger talents sets a competitive stage as they aim to bring the title home.
