Sri Lanka’s men’s cricket captain, Charith Asalanka, has high ambitions for the team, drawing inspiration from Sri Lanka’s golden era between 2007 and 2014. During that period, the team reached five World Cup finals, winning the 2014 T20 World Cup. However, performances in limited-overs cricket have declined since 2015, prompting Asalanka to lead a revival.

After three consecutive series victories, including wins against India and the West Indies, Asalanka’s primary goal is to bring Sri Lanka back to the top of international cricket. His target is to secure a spot in the top three of the ICC rankings, a position the team last held during their peak years. Currently, Sri Lanka sits at No. 8 in T20Is and No. 6 in ODIs.
Asalanka believes climbing the rankings will showcase consistent performances, helping the team avoid exposure in ICC tournaments. Reflecting on past successes, he hopes the team can replicate the achievements of the 2014 squad, which regularly made deep runs in global competitions. “If we’re consistently winning, we won’t be caught off guard,” Asalanka explained.
While Sri Lanka’s recent successes have come primarily at home on spin-friendly pitches, Asalanka has emphasized the importance of maintaining a competitive XI. New players like Janith Liyanage and Nishan Madushka have impressed, adding depth to the squad. Asalanka highlighted the importance of developing a strong core of 15-16 players over the next year, fostering healthy competition for spots in the playing XI to strengthen the team’s future prospects.
