India’s KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel will arrive in Australia a week ahead of the rest of the Test squad to gain match practice before the five-Test series starting November 22 in Perth. They will represent the India A team, captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, in the second and final four-day match scheduled to begin on November 7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). India A lost the first game by seven wickets in Mackay, a match overshadowed by a ball-change controversy. Ishan Kishan avoided a dissent charge after an altercation with the on-field umpire.
Rahul’s Recent Performance
Rahul was excluded from India’s playing XI after a disappointing performance in the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, where he scored 0 and 12. He made way for Shubman Gill in the second and third Tests, during which India suffered a 3-0 whitewash, marking their first home defeat in 24 years.
Jurel’s Test Journey
Meanwhile, Jurel, who debuted in Tests against England earlier this year, has not participated in any home Tests since Rishabh Pant’s return. He has played in two red-ball matches since March, recording low scores in the Duleep Trophy but a strong 93 in the Irani Cup against Mumbai.
Strategic Decision Amid Training Constraints
The decision to send Rahul and Jurel early is crucial, especially since the Indian team canceled their only intra-squad warm-up match in Perth. Captain Rohit Sharma explained that with only three days allotted for training, the focus is on match simulation for batters and bowlers to optimize their time. The team will depart for Australia on November 10, with plans to train at the WACA before the series opener at Optus Stadium, where they last played during their successful 2018-19 tour.
Rohit may miss the opening match due to personal reasons, with Abhimanyu Easwaran replacing him in the squad. Easwaran scored 7 and 12 in the first A game after starting the domestic season with four consecutive first-class centuries.
