Punjab Kings (PBKS) are preparing for the IPL 2025 mega auction with plans to retain just two players, according to a Cricbuzz report. The franchise is focusing on uncapped batters Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh for retention, while it appears unlikely that they will keep Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, a key player in their bowling attack.
As PBKS heads into the auction with the highest purse, management believes they can secure Arshdeep for a lower price than the Rs. 18 crore allocation for top retentions. This strategy aligns with their goal to revamp the team after a disappointing 2024 season, where they finished ninth in the points table with only five wins from 14 matches.
The team struggled under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran, as many senior batters failed to deliver consistent performances. In contrast, the uncapped Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh shone brightly, scoring 354 and 334 runs, respectively, making them the highest run-scorers for PBKS in the season.
In a bid to revitalize the team, newly-appointed head coach Ricky Ponting is keen on signing legendary Australian batter Steve Smith as the new captain. This leadership change aims to bring fresh energy to a franchise that has struggled to find success in recent years.
