Aston Villa continued their impressive run in the Champions League with a commanding 2-0 victory over Bologna on Tuesday, securing their third consecutive win in their first campaign in Europe’s elite competition in 41 years. The win, marked by second-half goals from John McGinn and Jhon Duran, keeps Villa at the top of the group standings with nine points and a perfect defensive record.
McGinn opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a beautifully struck free kick that sailed over a crowd of players and nestled into the far corner, surviving a VAR check for a potential handball. Duran then doubled the lead just nine minutes later, flicking a low cross from Morgan Rogers into the bottom corner after muscling past Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi.
“We are building something amazing here,” McGinn stated after the match. “Three games, three wins, and most importantly, we’ve not conceded a single goal. We don’t want to stop here, and we feel really strong with the players returning from injury.”
Bologna struggled to make an impact throughout the match, mustering only a few chances. Their best opportunity came in the first half when Thijs Dallinga found space following a through ball from Dan Ndoye, but Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez made a crucial save to deny the attempt.
Aston Villa maintained control of the match, coming close several times in the first half. McGinn nearly scored earlier with a long-range effort, but Bologna keeper Lukasz Skorupski made a vital stop, while a shot from Morgan Rogers just before halftime drifted wide.
Looking ahead, Aston Villa will visit Club Brugge for their next match in the 36-team league phase, where the top eight teams will automatically advance to the Round of 16.
Sporting CP Wins Over Sturm Graz

In another Champions League clash, Sporting CP secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Sturm Graz at Woerthersee Stadium. Goals from Nuno Santos and Viktor Gyokeres propelled the Portuguese side to their unbeaten start, accumulating seven points from their opening three matches.
Sporting took the lead midway through the first half when Geny Catamo made an impressive run down the right flank. His low cross was initially missed by Gyokeres but was successfully turned in by Santos, although home goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen may have felt he should have done better to stop the effort.
Gyokeres added the second goal with a powerful strike, showcasing his strength and composure as he brushed past a defender and calmly placed the ball past Scherpen.
With this victory, Sporting has won 11 of their last 12 matches across all competitions, their only setback being a draw against PSV Eindhoven. They will face Manchester City in their next Champions League fixture on November 5, looking to build on their strong performance in the tournament.
As the Champions League progresses, both Aston Villa and Sporting CP remain formidable contenders, showcasing their talent and determination on the European stage.
