Shakib Al Hasan returns to Bangladesh’s Test squad for his farewell series as the team prepares to face South Africa. This will be Shakib’s last appearance in red-ball cricket, marking the end of a distinguished Test career. His inclusion in the squad was initially in doubt due to personal and political circumstances.
In July 2024, Shakib left for the USA to participate in Major League Cricket. During his absence, Bangladesh saw significant political upheaval. The Sheikh Hasina government collapsed amid student protests, forcing the Prime Minister to flee, which resulted in Shakib losing his parliamentary seat. Additionally, a murder case was filed against him, making his return uncertain.
However, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Bangladesh’s Youth and Sports Adviser, confirmed that there are no legal barriers to Shakib’s return. The veteran all-rounder is expected to rejoin the squad’s practice session on Friday, as Bangladesh looks to secure a series victory over the visiting South African team.
The Bangladesh squad for the first Test remains largely unchanged from the previous series against India. Najmul Hossain Shanto continues as captain, and the core of the team stays intact. The only significant change is the exclusion of pacer Khaled Ahmed, while the rest of the squad remains consistent. With a balanced mix of pace and spin bowlers, Bangladesh appears well-prepared to challenge the Proteas on home soil.
