Lille pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the UEFA Champions League season, defeating 15-time European Cup winners Real Madrid 1-0 on Wednesday night. The victory ended Real Madrid’s 14-game unbeaten streak in the competition, with Lille head coach Bruno Genesio hailing it as a “perfect night.”
The match’s only goal came courtesy of Jonathan David, who converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time. Real Madrid struggled to break down Lille’s defense, and despite applying heavy pressure in the second half, they were unable to find an equalizer.
Lille’s fearless approach and relentless pressing were key to the victory, with Genesio praising his players for their belief in the game plan. “What this team did is incredible,” Genesio said. “You need everything to go right—decisive saves, a striker who scores, and a bit of luck.”
Goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was instrumental in Lille’s success, making several spectacular saves to deny Real Madrid as they pushed for a late goal. Chevalier’s heroics ensured Lille held on for the memorable win, especially during the final 30 minutes when Real increased the pressure.
“We played a very good first half, and everyone played together,” Genesio added. “We studied Real’s recent game against Atletico Madrid, where they tend to cut inside, so we intensified our defense in those areas, even at the cost of possession.”
Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, admitting that the defeat was a setback after a long unbeaten run across all competitions. “It seemed like we were improving, but today we took a step back,” Ancelotti said. “Hopefully, we will learn from this defeat just as we did after our loss to Atletico in January.”
The victory is a major milestone for Lille in their Champions League campaign, while Real Madrid will look to bounce back and regain momentum as the competition progresses.
