Bill Gates, the tech entrepreneur and philanthropist, has revealed his surprising fitness regimen: pickleball. In a recent podcast interview with Nikhil Kamath, Gates discussed how his engagement with the sport has significantly enhanced his physical fitness.
Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, shared insights into the skyrocketing popularity of pickleball, particularly in North America. The topic arose when Kamath complimented Gates on his improved fitness, asking, “What’s your fitness secret?” Gates responded, “I’ve been playing more tennis and a little bit of pickleball.”
Intrigued by the sport’s rapid rise, Kamath inquired whether pickleball was gaining traction globally, especially in India. Gates emphasized the remarkable growth of pickleball in the U.S., particularly in states like California and Florida. “In North America, it’s unbelievable—particularly in California and Florida. More people play pickleball now than tennis,” he asserted.
So, what exactly makes pickleball so appealing? The sport combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, played on a smaller court with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball. Its accessibility and fast paced nature attract players of all ages and skill levels, contributing to its widespread popularity.
Gates’ endorsement is expected to further amplify the sport’s appeal, potentially drawing even more players to the courts.
The Origin of Pickleball
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. Who sought to create an engaging summer activity for their children. They devised a game utilising ping pong paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a low badminton net. The game quickly gained popularity, evolving from a backyard pastime to a recognized sport enjoyed by many. Various stories exist regarding the origin of its name, but one fact remains clear: pickleball has evolved far beyond its humble beginnings.
