The 2024 MotoGP season kicked off with a thrilling sprint race under the lights of the Lusail International Circuit on Saturday, just over 100 days after the 2023 championship concluded. Jorge Martin, last year’s dominant force in the sprint races, continued his impressive form by controlling all 11 laps to take victory, marking his 10th career sprint win.
Starting from pole, the Pramac Ducati rider surged into Turn 1 ahead of KTM’s Brad Binder, who launched well from fourth on the grid. Binder would stay close but never seriously threatened Martin, finishing just 0.548 seconds behind in second place.
The battle for the final podium spot saw Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro make a late charge, overtaking reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia to secure third, delivering Aprilia its first-ever Qatar Grand Prix podium. Bagnaia, who struggled with sprint races in 2023, continued to show inconsistent form and had to settle for fourth.
Eight-time world champion Marc Marquez made an impressive debut on his Gresini Ducati, finishing fifth despite a mistake late in the race that cost him a podium spot. Marquez, who switched to Ducati for the 2024 season, showcased his competitive edge by climbing through the field after early battles with VR46 Ducati’s Fabio Di Giannantonio.
Di Giannantonio’s race came to a sudden end with a bizarre crash at Turn 10 on lap three. Meanwhile, Martin and Binder broke away from the pack, maintaining a close gap before Martin extended his lead to half a second, holding Binder at bay until the checkered flag.

Espargaro’s podium bid began when he passed Marquez on lap eight after the Gresini rider ran wide at Turn 14. Espargaro then reeled in Bagnaia and swept past him at Turn 15 on the penultimate lap to claim third.
Marquez’s fifth-place finish saw him fend off the second factory Ducati rider, Enea Bastianini, by 0.450 seconds. Alex Marquez, riding the sister Gresini Ducati, followed closely in seventh.
Rookie sensation Pedro Acosta scored points on his MotoGP debut for Tech3 GasGas, finishing eighth, while Maverick Vinales grabbed the final point in ninth for Aprilia. Early top-six contender Jack Miller faded to 10th on his KTM.
Behind Miller, VR46 Ducati’s Marco Bezzecchi finished 11th, while Fabio Quartararo was the best of the Yamahas in 12th. Honda’s Joan Mir finished 15th as the top factory rider for the team, ahead of LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco. Luca Marini rounded out the classified finishers in 21st.
With Jorge Martin continuing his sprint dominance and Marquez showing early promise on his new Ducati, the stage is set for an exciting 2024 MotoGP season. All eyes now turn to the main 22-lap race on Sunday, where the riders will aim to capitalize on their early momentum.
