British Basketball Federation terminates BBL operating license over financial issues

The British Basketball League’s (BBL) operating company has had its licence revoked by the British Basketball Federation (BBF) amid serious financial concerns. Basketball League Ltd, which has managed the men’s professional league under a ten-year licence awarded in 2017, is now facing significant operational uncertainty.

The BBF took decisive action as it assessed the financial stability of Basketball League Ltd, especially in light of its ownership structure. The league has been partially owned by the American investment firm 777 Partners, which recently encountered difficulties with a proposed takeover of English Premier League club Everton. This instability raised alarms regarding the BBL’s long-term viability, prompting the BBF to act before planning for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

In an official statement, the BBF detailed its monitoring efforts: “As the licensor for the British Basketball League, the British Basketball Federation has been closely observing the financial position of Basketball League Ltd. The goal has been to support the league’s sustainable growth and consolidate recent advancements.”

However, the BBF highlighted concerning information regarding Basketball League Ltd’s finances, including the company’s creditor arrangements with two major creditors. This prompted the BBF board to unanimously agree to terminate the licence immediately.

To ensure the continued operation of the league, the BBF has committed to protecting the interests of fans, players, staff, and clubs. The BBF is implementing interim measures to organize the 2024/25 season in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Additionally, the BBF focuses on establishing long-term governance and developmental strategies for professional basketball in Britain. The BBF will carefully evaluate potential investors and emphasize maintaining robust standards in the governance and management of the sport.

While the BBF expressed regret over the necessary actions, it remains optimistic that the governance of professional basketball in Britain will improve, reflecting the progress of Great Britain’s national teams and the growing interest and participation in the sport across the nation.
