The spot-kick was awarded for handball after referee Colin Steven was called to the monitor by VAR official Alan Muir, following Nicolas Kuhn’s cross striking James Penrice’s arm. Earlier in the game, Steven had given a penalty to Hearts after Lawrence Shankland’s header hit Liam Scales’ arm, but he reversed the decision after reviewing the footage.
