Scottish Premiership: Celtic Defeat Hearts, Aberdeen Stay Close at the Top

Deadline-day signings Arne Engels and Luke McCowan scored their first goals for Celtic, leading the champions to a 2-0 victory over Hearts in a Scottish Premiership match influenced by VAR. Engels, Celtic’s record signing, made his first start and converted a 52nd-minute penalty. The spot-kick was awarded for handball after referee Colin Steven was called to the monitor by VAR official Alan Muir, following Nicolas Kuhn’s cross striking James Penrice’s arm. Earlier in the game, Steven had given a penalty to Hearts after Lawrence Shankland’s header hit Liam Scales’ arm, but he reversed the decision after reviewing the footage.

Hearts remained competitive until the 89th minute, when McCowan scored Celtic’s second, curling a shot from 20 yards out after receiving James Forrest’s pass. Craig Gordon managed to palm the shot onto the post, but the ball bounced into the net, sealing the win for Celtic.

Aberdeen Maintains Perfect Record

Meanwhile, Pape Habib Guèye scored twice as Aberdeen defeated Motherwell 2-1 to maintain their 100% home record. Guèye opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Jack MacKenzie and slotting the ball into the bottom corner following a quick break. He completed his brace 10 minutes from time, heading in a rebound. Moses Ebiye scored a late goal for Motherwell, but Aberdeen held on for the win.

Ross County Claims First Win

Ross County secured their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Dundee, thanks to goals from Akil Wright and Jordan White. Kilmarnock, down to 10 men, fought back twice to secure a 2-2 draw against St Mirren. Hibernian defeated St Johnstone 2-0, earning David Gray his first Premiership win as permanent Hibs manager.

Rangers Chairman Steps Down

In other news, Rangers chairman John Bennett stepped down due to health reasons, with former director John Gilligan taking over temporarily. Critics have targeted Rangers for their poor start to the season, including a 3-0 loss to Celtic. They now prepare to face Dundee United next.
