Pep Guardiola’s Future at Manchester City: Will This Be His Final Season?

As Pep Guardiola enters the final-year of his contract with Manchester City, speculation about his future has once again surfaced. After Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan, an Italian journalist probed whether Guardiola could envision himself managing in Italy one day.

“I love English football; it is fantastic, really enjoyable. They leave you alone to get on with the job. That doesn’t happen anywhere else,” Guardiola responded.

Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City has already exceeded expectations. Since joining in 2016, he has surpassed the length of his previous managerial stints—four years at Barcelona and three at Bayern Munich. By the end of this season, Guardiola will have completed nine years at City, far longer than initially anticipated.

“This is a great club. I really feel good being here,” Guardiola remarked, reflecting on his prolonged stay.

City has provided Guardiola with a unique platform unlike any other in elite European football. Supported by the vast resources of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, he has had the freedom to build a team entirely in his vision. With significant investments, City has dominated the Premier League in unprecedented fashion. His close ties with CEO Ferran Soriano and sporting director Txiki Begiristain—both of whom he worked with at Barcelona—further solidify his bond with the club. Guardiola is also beloved by City supporters, making it increasingly difficult for him to walk away.

Each time his contract renewal has approached, Guardiola has found himself persuaded to stay. Now, once again, he faces the question: Does he have the energy and desire to continue?

One key factor that could influence his decision is the looming outcome of the hearing into more than 100 charges of alleged financial breaches against the club. The investigation, which started this week, adds uncertainty to the landscape.

Guardiola is no stranger to the toll that football management can take. Jurgen Klopp, once his fiercest rival, stepped down as Liverpool manager last season, citing exhaustion from the relentless pursuit of success. Klopp’s intense rivalry with Guardiola had driven both managers to new heights. With the German even briefly halting City’s dominance by winning the Premier League title in 2020. In January, Klopp shocked the football world by announcing his need for a break, saying, “It is not what I want to do, but it is 100% the right thing.”

Guardiola himself took a 12-month sabbatical after his time at Barcelona. Since returning to management with Bayern Munich in 2013, he has worked continuously, winning league-titles in nine of last 11-seasons. Despite City’s dominance, the pressure in England has been unrelenting. With Klopp’s Liverpool and now Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal pushing City to their limits.

Arteta, once Guardiola’s assistant at City, has transformed Arsenal since taking over in 2019. The Gunners have emerged as City’s most significant challengers, with Arteta seeking to dethrone his former mentor. City and Arsenal now represent one of the fiercest rivalries in English football.

Arsenal came agonizingly close to toppling City in recent seasons. Two-years ago, the Gunners spent 248-days at the top of Premier League standings, only to lose the title to City. Last season, they pushed the title race to the final day, ultimately finishing just two points behind Guardiola’s team.

Arteta has since signed a new three-year contract, signaling Arsenal’s confidence in him to continue challenging Guardiola. However, like Klopp before him, Arteta has experienced firsthand the extraordinary effort required to compete with City. Despite Arsenal’s impressive performance last season—setting a club record with 28 wins and amassing 89 points—the Gunners still fell short of City’s unyielding standard.

Although Arteta’s Arsenal has shown glimpses of breaking City’s dominance, Guardiola remains resilient. Last season, he led City to a historic treble, including the club’s first-ever Champions League title and a record fourth consecutive Premier League crown.

As City prepares to face Arsenal on Sunday, they sit two points ahead of the Gunners and remain the only team with a perfect start to the season. If this is to be Guardiola’s final campaign at City, he is already leading it from the front.

With Guardiola at the helm, Manchester City continues to thrive. But the questions surrounding his future—and whether this could be his last season—loom larger than ever.
