Pep Guardiola has stated that he will assess Erling Haaland’s mental and physical readiness before deciding on his participation in Manchester City’s upcoming match against Brentford.
Haaland has been absent from the squad this week following the death of a close family friend, Ivar Eggja, who was a significant figure in his life. The Premier League champions granted Haaland compassionate leave during this difficult time. However, he was spotted training on Thursday, sparking speculation about his return.
Eggja, 59, was a close family friend and served as the best man at Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge Haaland’s, wedding. Known affectionately as “uncle” by Erling, Eggja had a deep personal connection with the striker, and his passing has profoundly affected him.
Guardiola expressed his understanding of the situation, emphasizing the emotional toll on Haaland and his family. “It was a tough moment for him and his family. It was sad news. He was close to him. Our thoughts are with him and his family. We will see tomorrow if he is mentally and physically able to play,” Guardiola said.
Despite the emotional setback, Haaland has had an explosive start to the season, scoring seven goals in the first three matches, including two hat-tricks. He is in pursuit of a third consecutive Golden Boot. Haaland shared a heartfelt tribute to Eggja on social media, stating, “You are a legend, Ivar. Words cannot describe how much you meant to me! Thank you for everything. Rest in peace, Ivar.”

In Haaland’s absence, City will have to consider alternative strategies, especially following the departure of his previous backup, Julian Alvarez, to Atletico Madrid. However, the club has successfully navigated title challenges in the past without a traditional striker. Employing a false nine system that Guardiola has used effectively.
A victory against Brentford would allow City to temporarily extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points over title rivals Arsenal, who will not play until Sunday’s north London derby.
Haaland’s impact was evident in last-season’s match against Brentford, where he scored only goal, leading City to a narrow victory. Brentford manager Thomas Frank acknowledged the challenge of containing the prolific striker, stating, “It’s close to impossible. A lot of teams have tried to neutralise him, but he’s a great player.”
As situation develops, all eyes will be on Haaland and whether he will return to action for City this weekend.
