World No. 6 in men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna, is set to make his debut in the sixth edition of the Tennis Premier League (TPL) when the tournament takes place in Mumbai this December.
Bopanna, a two-time Grand Slam champion and three-time Olympian, expressed his excitement about joining the league, praising its innovative 25-point format. “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Tennis Premier League, especially with its unique format,” Bopanna said. “It’s a fantastic way to conclude the year. I believe that tournaments like the TPL, which focus on grassroots development, will inspire more young players.”
This season marks Bopanna’s first appearance in the franchise-based league. With nearly two decades on the ATP tour, he will be adjusting to a new format that differs from the traditional professional circuit.
In the TPL, each franchise will compete in five matches to qualify for the semifinals. Matches will include Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles, and Men’s Doubles. With each category worth 25 points, making a total of 100 points per match. Over the league stage, teams will accumulate up to 500 points. The top four teams on the points table will advance to the semifinals.
Kunal Thakkur, Co-Founder of the Tennis Premier League, welcomed Bopanna’s addition to the league. “Having Rohan Bopanna onboard is fantastic.
