Moeen Ali is confident that Brendon McCullum is “100 percent” the right choice to revive England’s struggling white-ball cricket. Ali, who is retiring from international cricket at 37, believes McCullum will enhance England’s performance and support Jos Buttler, who will continue as captain.
Moeen’s Experience and Expectations

Moeen, who played 138 ODIs and 92 T20Is over a decade, was a key part of England’s World Cup victories in 2019 and 2022. As Buttler’s vice-captain during the latter tournament, Moeen witnessed firsthand the impact of a strong leadership partnership. With McCullum now taking over from Matthew Mott, who was dismissed following England’s semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup, Moeen expects him to replicate the successful dynamic.
McCullum’s Impact and Leadership
Moeen praised McCullum’s energy and experience, noting that his past as a top white-ball batter and New Zealand captain will lend him significant respect in the dressing room. “Brendon just brings this energy,” Moeen said, emphasizing that McCullum’s practical experience will make his coaching advice more credible and effective. He believes McCullum will relieve some pressure from Buttler, who has been juggling batting, wicketkeeping, and captaincy duties.
Buttler’s Recent Struggles and Support
McCullum has already commented on Buttler’s recent struggles, including a noticeable dip in his public demeanor and a calf injury that has kept him from competitive play. Meanwhile, Moeen, who often served as an on-field strategist and communicator, views McCullum as a valuable ally for Buttler. Consequently, he believes McCullum will help Buttler manage his many responsibilities more effectively.
Future Leadership and Team Rebuild
Looking forward, Moeen is optimistic about England’s future, despite the team undergoing a rebuild after disappointing defenses of their 50-over and T20 titles. He anticipates that new leaders, such as Phil Salt and Harry Brook, will emerge, thereby providing Buttler with a supportive leadership group. Furthermore, Moeen added, “Jos will make everyone feel like they can come and speak to him,” confident that Buttler will foster a collaborative environment as he guides the team through this transition.
