The BCCI has named former India wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra as the fifth selector in Ajit Agarkar’s India men’s selection committee.

Ajay Ratra Joins Agarkar's Selection Panel

Ratra was selected from a pool of candidates, including Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Shakti Singh, and Ajay Mehra, following interviews conducted by the BCCI’s cricket advisory committee. He replaces former India fast bowler Salil Ankola, completing a selection process that began in January 2024.

Ratra’s first assignment as a selector will be the season-opening Duleep Trophy. Ajit Agarkar’s appointment as chairman led to the need for a new selector. This change deviated from the traditional practice of having one representative from each of India’s five cricket zones.

Ratra’s Cricket and Coaching Background

Ratra, who played six Tests and 12 ODIs for India in 2002, brings extensive coaching experience to the role. He has served as head coach for Assam, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, and was part of VVS Laxman’s interim coaching staff for the ODI series in South Africa after the 2023 World Cup.

A Memorable Cricketing Career

Ratra gained recognition for his unbeaten 115 against West Indies in the 2002 Antigua Test, becoming the youngest wicketkeeper to score a Test century. He was also part of the Under-19 World Cup-winning team led by Mohammed Kaif in 2000.
