Manchester United Consider Thomas Tuchel as Contingency Plan for Erik ten Hag Amid Early Season Struggles

Manchester United are reportedly considering Thomas Tuchel as their top candidate to replace Erik ten Hag should the club decide to make a managerial change. This comes as ten Hag faces mounting pressure after a disappointing start to the season. Including recent back-to-back defeats, with the latest loss coming against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Despite only three games into the current season, ten Hag’s position has become precarious. The Dutch manager had a turbulent summer, waiting anxiously to learn whether he would continue in his role. The club’s new hierarchy chose to retain him, supporting his position with a series of new signings and a reshuffle in his coaching staff. However, many of last season’s issues persist, and the team’s performance has raised serious concerns.

The recent defeat to Liverpool highlighted a lack of a cohesive playing style, raising questions about ten Hag’s tenure, even though he has been in charge for over two years. As a precaution, Manchester United have prepared contingency plans, with Tuchel emerging as their preferred replacement if necessary.

Tuchel, who parted ways with Bayern Munich at the end of the previous season after a trophy-less campaign, has an impressive track record. His previous stints at Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and Chelsea. Where he won the UEFA Champions League, make him a highly sought-after candidate. Discussions between Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Tuchel took place over the summer. But Tuchel ultimately decided to remain patient with ten Hag.

One potential candidate not in running is Gareth Southgate, who recently stepped down as England manager after an eight-year tenure. Although Southgate has his admirers in the Premier League and is eager to return to club management. He is expected to take some time off following his departure from the England role.

Despite the swirling speculation, ten Hag remains resolute about his ability to lead Manchester United to success. He has already secured trophies in his first two seasons, though these achievements did not compensate for a dismal Premier League performance last term.

Manchester United’s CEO, Omar Berrada, has publicly affirmed the club’s support for ten Hag, stating, “Erik has our full backing. We have worked very closely with him this transfer window. We believe Erik is the right coach for us and we are fully committed to him.” This endorsement underscores the club’s intention to support ten Hag while acknowledging that the pressure to deliver results remains high.
