Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has praised his team’s progress in tyre-management following their unexpected triumph at Italian Grand Prix. Vasseur’s comments highlight significant strides Ferrari has made with their SF24-car, which was crucial in securing a memorable home victory.
Throughout the Monza weekend, Ferrari exhibited strong performance, although Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz qualified fourth and fifth, respectively, falling short of pole position by a narrow margin. Despite their starting positions, Leclerc’s aggressive first-lap maneuver, overtaking McLaren’s Lando Norris, set the stage for a dramatic race.
As the race unfolded, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri appeared to be in control. However, McLaren’s decision to call Piastri in for a-second stop, combined with Ferrari’s bold one-stop strategy, played a pivotal role. Ferrari’s choice to keep Leclerc and Sainz on track paid off, with Leclerc maintaining his position and ultimately securing victory after 53 laps.
Reflecting on the race, Vasseur expressed delight and satisfaction with the team’s performance. “What a fantastic result for the team! This victory is a tremendous boost for all of us and our passionate tifosi who made such a difference this weekend,” Vasseur said. He noted that despite their disappointment after qualifying, Ferrari’s race pace was a testament to their improved performance.
Vasseur highlighted the advancements in Ferrari’s tyre management compared to last year. “Last season, tyre management was our biggest weakness. This year, with the SF24, it’s become one of our strengths. We saw this in Zandvoort and again here in Monza,” Vasseur explained. The team’s ability to adapt their strategy based on tyre wear and degradation was crucial, allowing them to opt for a one-stop strategy effectively.
The team’s strategy was bolstered by Sainz’s contribution, providing valuable feedback on tyre performance. Which helped Ferrari remain flexible and responsive throughout the race.
Ferrari Chairman John Elkann also lauded the fervent support from the Tifosi, noting how their enthusiasm contributed to Leclerc’s success. “Winning on home soil at Monza is an unparalleled experience. Elkann said, “We dedicate this victory to our fans who gave Charles that extra push in the final laps.”
Both Vasseur and Elkann praised the unity and effort of the Ferrari team, acknowledging the collective achievement in delivering a spectacular win at their home Grand Prix.
