Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has expressed his thoughts on the controversial disallowed goal that played a pivotal role in their 2-1 defeat to Brighton. The incident, which saw Joshua Zirkzee ruled offside, ultimately denied United a crucial goal, leaving the team to reflect on a frustrating outcome.
The match saw Brighton secure a late victory thanks to a goal from Joao Pedro, with former United striker Danny Welbeck also finding the back of the net for the Seagulls. United’s Amad Diallo had earlier leveled the score for Erik ten Hag’s side, and it appeared that Alejandro Garnacho had sealed a dramatic win when he finished off a cross from Bruno Fernandes. However, the goal was disallowed after the ball struck Joshua Zirkzee just before crossing the line. Leading to an offside decision following a VAR review. This turn of events allowed Brighton to capitalize. With Pedro heading home a Simon Adingra assist to clinch all three points.
In a post-match interview with the club’s media, Onana shared his thoughts on the disallowed goal: “We came here to win, and unfortunately, we didn’t. I think we played well, had more chances, more possession, and more control of the game. But, unfortunately, the officials disallowed the goal. That’s part of football, and part of life, and we have to move on. We’ll sit down, analyze what went wrong, and prepare for the challenges ahead.”
Onana emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong mentality, especially given the high expectations at a club like Manchester United. “Big games are coming, and the expectation is always high. It’s crucial that we maintain a positive mentality, not just me, but all the players. It’s really helpful for the club and the team. We move on, and we have to be ready for the upcoming matches.”

United manager Erik ten Hag, on the other hand, did not hold back in his criticism of team’s overall performance. He pointed out the need for better cohesion and decision-making, particularly in critical moments. “It’s disappointing, especially when we had control for large parts of the game. We conceded two unnecessary goals that were very avoidable. We need to act better as a team. Everyone has to know their job, and as a unit, we need to protect our goal.”
Ten Hag’s comments underscore the need for United to tighten up defensively and improve their collective response in challenging situations. As they prepare for upcoming fixtures, the team will need to address these issues to avoid similar setbacks in future.
