Manchester City has officially welcomed back Ilkay Gundogan, reuniting with the midfielder just 14 months after his departure to Barcelona. Gundogan, who played a pivotal role as captain during City’s historic treble-winning season. Returns on a free transfer, signing a one-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months. He will don the number 19 shirt upon his return.

Reflecting on his return, Gundogan expressed his excitement: “My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch. I grew as a person and a player, developed a special relationship with the City fans, and enjoyed incredible success. It was an exceptional period in my life, and the opportunity to return means so much.”
He continued, “When you leave a place like City, you start to appreciate it even more. You realize how amazing time was and how big the club is—the best in the world, in my opinion. Coming back after a year away is an incredible feeling.”
Gundogan’s admiration for Guardiola was evident: “Everyone knows the respect I have for Pep—he’s the best manager in world. Working with him every day makes you a better player; you’re constantly challenged, which is exactly what you want as a professional. I cannot wait to work with him again.”

In addition to his excitement about rejoining Guardiola, Gundogan is thrilled to be back among his former teammates: “They are world-class footballers, and I’m genuinely delighted to have the chance to train and play alongside them again. Honestly, I cannot wait to wear the City shirt again.”
Gundogan finalized his return after meeting with Guardiola, City’s chief executive Ferran Soriano. And sporting director Txiki Begiristain at the Catalan restaurant Tast in Manchester, co-owned by the trio. The meeting marked the culmination of his journey back to the club where he made a lasting impact, both as a leader and a player.
As City prepares for another season, return of their treble-winning captain adds depth and experience to an already formidable squad. Gundogan’s presence is sure to bolster their ambitions as they aim to replicate the success of their previous campaigns.
