On August 9, 2024, at the Paris Olympics, Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev of Uzbekistan secured the gold medal in the men’s 71kg boxing event by defeating Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez of Mexico at Stade-Roland Garros. Muydinkhujaev, who had previously won gold at the 2023 World Championships, added the Olympic gold to his impressive achievements in his debut Games.

“I just want to thank all the people back home who have supported me. I feel happy,” Muydinkhujaev said. “I’m now the world champion and the Olympic champion. That was my goal when I came to Paris.”
Despite aiming for gold, Verde Alvarez settled for silver, becoming the first Mexican boxer to win a silver medal at the Olympics since 1984. Reflecting on his performance, Verde Alvarez noted, “It wasn’t the result I was expecting, but I’m very happy. I went to try and win the fight in the third round as I knew I was down on points, but we just couldn’t do it. But that’s how life is.”
Earlier in the competition, Omari Jones of the USA and Lewis Richardson of Great Britain earned bronze medals in the men’s 71kg boxing division. The matches at the Paris 2024 Olympics showcased remarkable talent and competitive spirit, with Muydinkhujaev standing out as the gold medalist.
