Paris 2024 Basketball: USA Women Overcome Nigeria in Quarterfinals

In their quarterfinal clash at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the USA women’s basketball team emerged victorious with an 88-74 win over Nigeria on Wednesday, August 7, at Bercy Arena. Coach Cheryl Reeve’s decision to replace Diana Taurasi with Jackie Young in the starting lineup proved to be a game-changer.

Young was instrumental in the win, contributing 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and playing a crucial role in both defense and transition play. The USA capitalized on fast breaks, scoring 23 points in transition.

Reeve praised Young’s performance, highlighting her all-around contribution: “She’s playing the way we want to play. Both ends of the floor, and it’s time to get to that space where we understand that if we don’t win, we go home.”

The American team’s depth was evident as every player scored at least once, with four players reaching double figures. A’ja Wilson led the way with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. This marks her third double-double in four games at Paris 2024.

Nigeria’s Promise Amukamara led her team with 19 points. This quarterfinal appearance marked a historic achievement for Nigeria. As it was the first time an African team had reached this stage. Nigerian coach Rena Wakama acknowledged the progress made but also noted the need for further development: “We just have to learn and grow. I have a super young team. We need more time together.”

Looking ahead, the USA women’s team will face Australia in the semifinals. The game is scheduled for Friday at 5:30 p.m. CET (11:30 a.m. ET). The winner will advance to the gold medal game, while the losing team will compete for bronze.
