Following a painful collision at Turn 1 during the Silverstone Sprint that left Marco Bezzecchi with a foot injury. The Italian racer had to navigate additional hurdles during the Sunday British MotoGP.
Bezzecchi’s crash on Saturday was caused when Franco Morbidelli, a friend and fellow VR46 Academy member, lost control under braking and collided with Bezzecchi’s GP23. Morbidelli later visited Bezzecchi to apologize for the incident.
“Morbidelli came by and apologized,” Bezzecchi recounted. “It was a mistake that really frustrated me, but since it’s already happened, I accept his apology. I know it wasn’t intentional.”
As a result of the incident, Morbidelli received a double long lap penalty from the FIM Stewards for ‘irresponsible riding causing a crash’.
Sunday’s race presented another challenge for Bezzecchi when Brad Binder, starting two rows ahead, experienced a clutch issue with his KTM. Bezzecchi nearly collided with Binder and had to take evasive action. Which caused him to lose several positions and start the race in 13th. Despite accidents involving Trackhouse teammates Raul Fernandez and Miguel Oliveira ahead of him.
“During the race, the initial adrenaline helped manage the pain, but by the last 6-8 laps, I lost some sensitivity in my leg and especially in my foot,” Bezzecchi explained. “It was tough to gauge how much rear brake I was using, which was a challenge.”
Despite the injury and the tricky start, Bezzecchi made significant progress through the race, overtaking notable competitors like Fabio Quartararo, Morbidelli, Maverick Vinales, Jack Miller, and Pedro Acosta.
“The injury was painful but manageable,” he said. “The real issue was the start. If not for the scare with Binder, I could have finished further up.”
His teammate, Fabio di Giannantonio, finished in fifth place.
