After criticizing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during the T20 World Cup 2024 for Pakistan’s losses to the USA and India, Wasim Akram has declined the PCB’s offer for a key position. Akram had previously called for a major overhaul within the board and the team following the team’s disappointing performance. Now, he has turned down an offer to become either the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or an advisor to the chairman.
Akram, who resides in Karachi and frequently travels to Australia, cited familial commitments as the reason for his decision to reject the role based in Lahore. This move comes as PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi faces mounting criticism for his perceived lack of full commitment to cricketing matters. Naqvi, who also serves as the Federal Minister of Interior, is under pressure to address the concerns surrounding the board.
In his criticism after Pakistan’s defeat to India, Akram expressed frustration, urging for a fresh approach to the team and highlighting the disappointment among fans. He stated, “Enough is enough! Done! Bring in new kids, make a new Pakistan team. The entire Pakistan community back home and here (in the US) is depressed.”
Following Akram’s refusal, the PCB has approached Waqar Younis, who lives in Australia, for the same position. Younis has reportedly shown interest and is willing to return to Lahore for further discussions. Although the role of CEO does not currently exist in the PCB’s constitution, an amendment could introduce it.
