Sri Lanka cricket faces a potential setback as pacer Binura Fernando’s flu might keep him out of the first T20I against India, set for Saturday. The Indian cricket team in Sri Lanka arrived earlier this week for a white-ball series, including three T20Is and three ODIs. The T20I series kicks off tomorrow at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

This series marks Gautam Gambhir’s head coach debut, heightening anticipation among Indian fans. However, Sri Lankan fans are concerned by recent reports of Fernando’s illness. Currently under medical observation, Fernando’s availability remains uncertain, posing a significant challenge for the Sri Lanka T20I squad.
In response, Sri Lanka has called up all-rounder Ramesh Mendis as immediate backup. If Fernando is ruled out, Sri Lanka will be missing three key bowlers, as injuries to Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera have already sidelined them for the series. This could be a considerable setback for the team.
Sri Lanka is currently in a transition phase and will be led by Charith Asalanka, following Wanindu Hasaranga’s resignation after the T20 World Cup. The team is hoping to overcome these challenges and put up a strong performance against India.
