Asalanka Takes Over as Sri Lanka Captain for T20 Series Against India; SLC Announces Squad

Charith Asalanka will lead Sri Lanka in the upcoming three-match T20 series against India, starting on July 27, after replacing Wanindu Hasaranga, who stepped down earlier this month.

On Tuesday (July 23), Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) also announced a strong 16-member squad for the series.

No Mathews or Dhananjaya de Silva in Sri Lanka Squad

Veterans Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva are not in the squad, while Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Janith Perera made the cut. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dilshan Madhushanka are also missing, with no reason given for their omission.

“The Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando, approved the squad. The T20I games are scheduled for the 27th, 28th, and 30th of July at the PICS Pallekele, according to SLC.

Sri Lanka had a disappointing T20 World Cup 2024, winning only one match and failing to reach the Super 8 stage. This series will be their first since then. Meanwhile, India, led by Shubman Gill, recently played a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe after their victory under Rohit Sharma.
