The SA20 tournament has already enjoyed two successful seasons, and its third edition is set to begin on January 9, 2025, with the final scheduled for February 8. This six-team competition features teams that are extensions of Indian franchises, with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape (affiliated with the Sunrisers Hyderabad) having won both previous seasons.

As the five other teams gear up to dethrone the reigning champions, they are bolstering their rosters to address gaps from the first two seasons.
Joe Root Joins Paarl Royals
In a significant development, the Paarl Royals have signed English star batter Joe Root. This addition will enhance their already formidable batting lineup, which includes Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, and David Miller.
Previously, the Rajasthan Royals (the parent franchise of the Paarl Royals) picked Joe Root during the IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 1 Cr. Root played three games, scored 10 runs, and bowled a couple of overs without taking a wicket. Both the Royals’ management and Root are hopeful for a more impactful performance in SA20.
Royals’ Performance in the First Two Seasons
The Royals finished fourth in the points table during the first season and lost to the Pretoria Capitals in the semi-final. In the next season (SA20 2024), they finished third but lost to the Joburg Super Kings in the Eliminator, failing to reach the final once again.
