Teddy Sheringham has received praise from Roy Keane, despite their turbulent relationship during their time together at Manchester United.
The duo, who were teammates for four successful years at Old Trafford, secured three Premier League titles and famously completed the historic Treble in the 1998/99 season.
While their on-field partnership yielded remarkable success, off the pitch, their relationship was marred by tension. Keane recently acknowledged on The Overlap, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, that he didn’t particularly like Sheringham, sparking a candid discussion with Gary Neville. In a viral social media clip, Neville playfully teased Keane about his feelings towards a mystery player in a photograph. Prompting Keane to jest about his list of players he didn’t like, before correctly identifying Sheringham.
Keane later clarified their relationship, stating, “That’s wrong. I didn’t mind Teddy, I just didn’t get on with him. We had a fallout but that’s just working.”
In an interview with Online Poker, Sheringham spoke warmly about Keane despite their rocky history, emphasizing Keane’s leadership qualities: “I always respected Roy, he was our captain and our leader and was one of the best players I ever played with. I loved having him in my football teams I played with him at Nottingham Forest as well as Manchester United and there was no better leader in football that I’d played for.”
Sheringham has previously detailed the tense fallout with Keane in his book ‘1999: Manchester United, the Treble and All That’. He recounted a heated incident during which Keane confronted him aggressively in a car. Leading to a long period of strained relations.
Despite their differences, Sheringham’s admiration for Keane’s footballing abilities and leadership remains steadfast. Reflecting on their complex but ultimately successful partnership at one of English football’s most storied clubs.
