Zimbabwe Cricket has unveiled its squad for the upcoming one-off Test match against Ireland, marking a historic moment as it will be their inaugural Test encounter. Craig Ervine will lead the 15-member squad, which includes debutants Clive Madande, Brian Bennett, and Johnathan Campbell.
New Talent Makes Debut
Madande, Bennett, and Campbell, currently part of Zimbabwe’s T20I squad against India, join other fresh faces like Joylord Gumbie, who is poised for his Test debut. The return of Sean Williams, after recovering from injury, bolsters the team’s experience alongside seasoned players Tendai Chatara, Blessing Muzarabani, Victor Nyauchi, and Richard Ngarava.
The Test match against Ireland is scheduled from July 25 to 29 at Stormont in Belfast, marking Zimbabwe’s first Test in over a year, following their last match against West Indies in February 2023. Despite not being in the ICC’s World Test Championship, Zimbabwe views this as an opportunity to nurture talent and fortify their Test cricket program.
Ireland, with a brief Test history since 2018, will host Zimbabwe for the first time in a red-ball format. They secured their maiden Test victory earlier this year against Afghanistan, adding anticipation to their clash with Zimbabwe. The absence of some players from previous Test series highlights the evolving composition of Zimbabwe’s squad under new leadership.
With a dynamic mix of youth and experience, Zimbabwe aims to make a strong impression in this historic encounter against Ireland, promising an intriguing Test match in Belfast.
