Ronald Koeman expressed frustration over the penalty decision that led to England’s equalizer in the Euro 2024 semi-final defeat against the Netherlands, stating that such decisions undermine the essence of football.
Harry Kane converted from the spot after VAR prompted referee Felix Zwayer to review Denzel Dumfries’ challenge on Kane, where the defender’s attempt to block the shot resulted in contact with Kane’s foot just after the striker had taken the shot, which went over the bar.
“As a former defender myself, what more could Dumfries do in that situation?” Koeman questioned. “He was trying to block the ball… Penalizing that challenges the fundamental aspects of playing proper football,” he added, attributing the incident to the intervention of VAR.
Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk also criticized Zwayer’s handling of the situation, noting the swift departure of the referee after the game as an indicator of the contentious nature of the decision. “I didn’t even have the chance to shake his hand. But it’s done; we lost, and it’s incredibly difficult to accept such pivotal moments,” Van Dijk remarked, suggesting that referees should face the media to explain such decisions, similar to how players are held accountable.
Reflecting on the tournament, Koeman emphasized the positives of his team’s performance while acknowledging England’s superior balance and efficiency. “We should be proud of what we’ve achieved in these weeks. Our players fought like lions until the very end,” Koeman concluded, congratulating England on their victory.
Van Dijk, contemplating his future at both club and international levels, indicated he would take time to evaluate his options. His Liverpool contract has one year remaining, and he intends to make decisions after recovering from the disappointment of the tournament.
