India’s T20I World Cup win has led to several significant changes. Firstly, the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli mark the end of an era, alongside the conclusion of Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach. Now, Gautam Gambhir is set to become the new head coach, empowered to select his own support staff.

The outgoing coaches are Vikram Rathour (batting), Paras Mhambrey (bowling), and T Dilip (fielding). Gambhir reportedly favors KKR batting coach Abhishek Nayar and former Indian fast bowler Vinay Kumar for the batting and bowling coach positions, respectively. The BCCI is considering Jonty Rhodes for the fielding coach role.
However, media reports indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) disagrees with Gambhir’s choices and has its own shortlist for the bowling coach position. Sources cited by news agency ANI reveal that the BCCI is considering former seamers Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji for the national team’s bowling coach role. However, the BCCI has reportedly rejected the idea of appointing Vinay Kumar.
Zaheer Khan, India’s third-highest wicket-taker among pacers in ODIs, has 311 Test wickets in 92 matches and a total of 610 wickets in 309 international matches across all formats. Many regard him as one of the greatest left-arm pacers in cricket history. Lakshmipathy Balaji, on the other hand, has taken 27 wickets in eight Test matches and 34 wickets in 30 ODIs, demonstrating his capabilities as a bowler for Team India.
