The highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa will take place at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, on June 29. With both teams eager to clinch the title after enduring lengthy waits, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
South Africa enters their first-ever World Cup final across ODIs and T20Is, while India, despite their strong performances, haven’t secured a title since their inaugural win under MS Dhoni in 2007.
However, the unpredictable element of weather looms large over the match. Rain interruptions have been a concern throughout the tournament, raising questions about what would happen if weather disrupts the final showdown.
According to the T20 World Cup 2024 rules set by the ICC, there is a designated reserve day in case of weather interference. To achieve a result in the final, teams must play a minimum of 10 overs. This ensures a fair and competitive conclusion to the match under T20 World Cup regulations. If rain affects play on the scheduled day, action will resume on the reserve day rather than starting afresh.
Umpires have the authority to wait up to 190 minutes beyond the scheduled time to maximize the chances of completing the match on the designated day.
If the reserve day is also washed out and no play is possible, the ICC has effective provisions in place to handle such situations. These measures ensure fair outcomes in case of unforeseen weather disruptions. The match will then proceed to a Super Over to determine the ultimate winner. If weather conditions also prevent a Super Over, the final will conclude with no result, and the T20 World Cup 2024 will declare India and South Africa joint winners.
