England’s hopes of defending their title at the T20 World Cup 2024 came crashing down in the semifinals against India at Guyana’s Providence Stadium. Jos Buttler and his team succumbed to India’s spinners, falling short by 68 runs.

In the aftermath, Buttler acknowledged India’s superior adaptation to the conditions and lamented the missed opportunities, particularly in not utilizing spinner Moeen Ali effectively. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Buttler credited Rohit Sharma’s Indian team for their performance and highlighted India’s adeptness in adjusting to the challenging surface.
“I think India clearly outplayed us. We allowed them to score 20-25 runs more than we should have. Credit to them for adapting well to the conditions; their spinners were outstanding. Looking back, we should have used Moeen Ali more effectively given how well the spinners were bowling,” Buttler commented in the interview.
Despite the disappointment, Buttler expressed pride in his team’s overall tournament performance. “I’m proud of the boys for their efforts throughout the tournament. We faced challenges but stuck together as a group. However, we didn’t perform when it mattered most,” he added.
England’s chase of 172 runs began promisingly with Buttler’s aggressive start, but his dismissal by Axar Patel triggered a collapse, leading to England being bowled out for just 103 in 16.4 overs.
