Shubman Gill made an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. He had traveled as a reserve with the Indian team. Reports now suggest the youngster is set to lead the Men in Blue. This leadership role is for the Zimbabwe tour, scheduled shortly after the World Cup.

Avesh Khan, who returned to India alongside Gill, will also travel to Zimbabwe for the five-match T20I series. The ace pacer had a stellar season with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League 2024, making a strong case for selection. Consequently, a young team is expected to travel to Zimbabwe, while senior players may be rested.
According to the Indian Express, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma, another IPL sensation, will get his maiden international call-up. The southpaw might find an opening partner in Gill, his Punjab teammate and close friend.
Other players in contention include Riyan Parag, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana.
National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman will serve as the head coach for the Zimbabwe tour, as the BCCI has yet to announce Rahul Dravid’s successor. Gautam Gambhir is reportedly set to take up the coaching role starting with the Sri Lankan tour on July 26.
Several youngsters delivered notable performances in the last IPL season. Rajasthan Royals’ all-rounder Riyan Parag, who scored 573 runs primarily batting at no.4, is among the probable squad members. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Harshit Rana and emerging player of the season Nitish Kumar Reddy are also expected to don the Blues for the first time.
