Following a disappointing defeat against South Africa in their final Super 8 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, West Indies captain Rovman Powell expressed regret over his team’s batting performance, particularly during the crucial middle overs. Powell highlighted that the frequent loss of wickets in clusters severely undermined their batting efforts.

“The way we batted today is something we want to erase from memory. We struggled significantly in the middle overs, and losing wickets in quick succession always puts immense pressure on the batting side,” Powell lamented.

Despite the batting woes, Powell commended his team’s resolve, mentioning their belief in defending a modest total of 135. While disappointed with the outcome, Powell acknowledged that the team has shown glimpses of promising cricket over the past year.

The West Indies innings saw early setbacks with Marco Jansen dismissing Shai Hope for a golden duck and Aiden Markram removing Nicholas Pooran cheaply, leaving the former champions reeling. Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase provided some stability with an 81-run partnership, but the team faltered after reaching 86/2, losing wickets at crucial junctures.

Apart from Mayers and Chase, only Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph managed to reach double-digit scores, with Russell falling victim to a run-out from a precise throw by Anrich Nortje.

In response, South Africa faced initial challenges but eventually achieved the revised target of 123 runs (124/7) to secure a spot in the semi-finals, thereby eliminating West Indies from the tournament.
