After a 104-run defeat against the West Indies, Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan reflected on the challenges his team faced. “The way they batted, scoring around 90 runs in the powerplay, it is tough to come back from that,” Rashid said. Despite the loss, Rashid emphasized the importance of learning from the experience as they prepare for the Super Eights stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Afghanistan began their campaign with dominant wins against Uganda, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, securing their place in the Super Eights. However, their last Group C match on June 18 exposed some vulnerabilities. Rashid highlighted that his team would focus on the positives from the game. “In the middle overs, we did well, and it was good to restrict them under 200. This game is good for understanding mindset and strategy. Hope to not repeat,” he said at the post-match party.
Learning from the Defeat
Rashid pointed out key takeaways from the match, including strong fielding, effective middle-overs bowling, and Noor Ahmad’s impressive spell. The young left-arm wrist spinner managed to concede only 20 runs in his four overs, even as the West Indies posted a formidable 218/5. “We take the positives with us, like fielding, middle-overs bowling, and Noor’s spell,” Rashid added.
Looking Ahead to the Super Eights
Afghanistan is set to face India, Australia, and Bangladesh in Group 1 of the Super Eights. Their next match is against India on June 20 in Bridgetown, Barbados. Rashid expressed confidence in his team’s ability to adapt to different conditions and learn from their recent defeat. “We’re looking forward to the challenge against India. The defeat against West Indies gave us valuable lessons, and we’re ready to implement those learnings in the Super Eight,” he said.
Rashid acknowledged the importance of adjusting to different pitches in upcoming matches. “We’ve achieved what we wanted – to get to the Super Eights. The different pitches coming up… we’ll adjust to them. Good learning this loss happened at this stage, [and] not in a do-or-die game,” the Afghan skipper concluded.
