Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested that retirement from football may not be far off, acknowledging that he has “few years left” in his illustrious career.
The forward, now 39 and representing Al Nassr, is gearing up for his sixth European Championship with Portugal, adding another milestone to his record-breaking international career, which includes the most caps (207) and goals (130) in Portugal’s history.
Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia has extended his playing days, with a prolific season yielding 50 goals, his highest single-season tally in eight years, albeit in a less competitive league compared to his prime at Real Madrid.
Despite maintaining his usual high standards, Ronaldo hinted at the twilight of his football journey. “I know I don’t have many years of football left,” he admitted ahead of Portugal’s opening Euro 2024 fixture against Czech Republic next Tuesday. “Every year after 35 is a gift, and now at 39, I cherish every moment.”
Reflecting on his recent form, Ronaldo emphasized his gratitude for continuing to represent Portugal, where he has scored 12 goals in his last 11 appearances since the beginning of 2023, including ten during Euro 2024 qualifiers.
His resurgence follows a disappointing 2022 World Cup campaign and a turbulent exit from Manchester United. During Qatar 2022, Ronaldo faced benching in crucial matches, notably missing the entire game against Switzerland where his replacement, Goncalo Ramos, scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory.
Under new Portugal coach Roberto Martinez, Ronaldo remains a pivotal figure, often leading the attacking line. As Euro 2024 commences, Ronaldo expressed readiness to respect Martinez’s decisions, acknowledging the privilege of representing his country at his age.
“To score for the national team is special,” he affirmed. “The national team is the love of my life, and winning the Euros would be a dream come true.”
Reflecting on his enduring passion for international football, Ronaldo highlighted the significance of his sixth European Championship appearance, setting yet another record in his storied career.
“Playing in my sixth Euros, from my debut in 2004 until now, the feeling is always one of pride and passion,” Ronaldo shared. “For me, playing for the national team is a passion that never diminishes.”
He concluded, “My focus remains on maintaining peak physical and mental readiness. I prepare meticulously and professionally, always ready to contribute and respect the coach’s decisions for the good of our country.”
