Euro Hopes in Jeopardy: Harry Maguire’s Injury Casts Shadow over England’s Squad

England’s preparations for Euro 2024 have been dealt a potentially significant blow with the news that Harry Maguire is struggling with a muscle injury. The Manchester United defender missed training with the main squad on Thursday and is reportedly at risk of missing the tournament altogether.

This comes as a major concern for Gareth Southgate, who has consistently relied on Maguire throughout his tenure as England manager. Maguire’s experience and leadership have been invaluable for the Three Lions, particularly evident in his inclusion for the three major tournaments under Southgate’s leadership, including the Euro 2020 final.

Maguire’s absence would force Southgate to reshuffle his defensive options. While Lewis Dunk and fellow Manchester United player Luke Shaw were also missing from training due to fitness issues, the potential loss of all three central defenders creates a significant challenge.

Southgate needs to trim the current 33-man squad down to 26 by Friday night, leaving him with limited time to find a suitable replacement. While John Stones is a reliable option, the other central defenders in the squad – Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, and Jarrad Branthwaite – possess considerably less international experience. Branthwaite only earned his first cap this week, while Konsa and Guehi have a combined total of just 13 caps.

Southgate has consistently defended Maguire’s selection, even during periods when the player faced criticism at club level. Maguire’s performances for England have often been strong, and Southgate has praised his leadership and resilience.

With the Euros fast approaching, England fans will be anxiously awaiting updates on Maguire’s fitness. His potential absence would be a major setback for the Three Lions, forcing Southgate to rely on less experienced players in a crucial international tournament.
