The future of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) hangs in the balance as Premier League clubs prepare to vote on its abolishment during their annual general meeting on Thursday.
This unprecedented move comes after a season marred by controversial VAR decisions, including a disallowed goal for Liverpool in their defeat at Tottenham. Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have been negatively impacted by VAR calls on multiple occasions, are spearheading the push for its removal.
Despite its 2019/20 introduction, VAR continues to be a contentious topic. While the proposal requires a 14-vote majority for abolishment, Wolves are unlikely to garner the necessary support, suggesting VAR is likely to stay.
However, change is on the horizon. Champions Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham are among those advocating for VAR’s retention, albeit with significant improvements. One anonymous club representative bluntly stated the current system is “not working.”

Wolves, in their official statement, acknowledge the effort put into VAR’s implementation but argue that “the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game.” They propose its removal for the 2024/25 season onwards.
One confirmed change for next season is the introduction of in-game VAR announcements by referees. This follows successful trials at FIFA competitions last year. While details like discussions won’t be broadcasted, the Premier League views it as a positive step forward.
Howard Webb, head of PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), remains a staunch VAR defender. He argues that discarding a system capable of rectifying “almost 40 clear errors” this season would be unwise.
Will Premier League clubs choose to “take that away” or embrace a potentially improved VAR system? Thursday’s vote is set to settle this crucial debate for the future of refereeing in England’s top division.
