Sepp van den Berg is determined to depart from Liverpool after experiencing repeated loan spells and believes that the club is pricing him out of a move.
The Dutch defender has spent the last four seasons away from Anfield. With stints in the Championship and successive clubs in the Bundesliga. Despite his efforts, he has never made a Premier League appearance for the Reds and is eager to secure a permanent transfer. On the first day of new manager Arne Slot’s tenure, van den Berg, whose value stands at £20 million, is expressing his frustrations.
Van den Berg expressed his disappointment to De Telegraaf, saying, “I knew that I couldn’t get from PEC Zwolle [straight] to Liverpool’s first team. I could have stayed at Liverpool for one or two more years, but I wanted to play regularly. I demanded to be loaned out every time because I felt I was improving. Physically, I made great strides.
“Training with the first team was tough but enjoyable. Facing players like Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mo Salah was challenging. But I wasn’t looked after. By 2021, I felt ready. I had good conversation with management and understood I wasn’t going to play ahead of Van Dijk, Matip, or Konate. But when I didn’t get a chance again, I said: ‘Figure it out, I want to leave.’
“They didn’t show confidence in me but still want to hinder my future. I want to play every week and continue developing. In Germany, I relished matches against top clubs like Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Leipzig, where I faced challenges every week.
Liverpool have denied any agreement for Mainz, where van den Berg was most recently on loan, to make his deal permanent for £5 million. The Reds already have several centre-backs, including Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez, limiting van den Berg’s opportunities for regular playing time.
Arne Slot, starting his contract with Liverpool, now faces the task of addressing the frustrations of the 22-year-old defender. Who is eager to secure his future away from Anfield.
