Nicholas Pooran is determined to lead West Indies to redemption in the upcoming T20 World Cup, following two disappointing outings in the previous editions. With the West Indies co-hosting the tournament, Pooran sees an opportunity to recapture the “special feeling” of triumph experienced in 2012 and 2016 under Daren Sammy’s leadership.
“Everyone wants to relive the magic of winning those two T20 World Cups,” Pooran expressed, emphasizing the desire to reignite that winning spirit, especially in front of their home fans.
Appointed as West Indies’ white-ball captain in May 2022, Pooran stepped down from the role after the 2022 World Cup, where West Indies faced an early exit. Reflecting on the disappointment, Pooran noted the growth among players since then.
“We’ve all matured as players and teammates,” Pooran remarked, highlighting the team’s evolution since their setback in Australia. “We understand the opportunity we have to redeem ourselves and make our fans proud.”
Despite missing out on recent T20I series against South Africa, Pooran commended the team’s resilience, noting their ability to secure a 3-0 victory even in the absence of senior players.
“Win or lose, what matters most is giving our all for the team,” Pooran emphasized, emphasizing the collective effort required for success.
With the likes of Andre Russell, Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford, and others in the squad, Pooran believes West Indies possesses a lineup filled with match-winners. He particularly lauded Russell’s impact and expressed confidence in the team’s depth.
“We have players who can single-handedly change the course of a game,” Pooran affirmed, citing recent performances against Australia as evidence of their potential.
As West Indies aim to become the first team to win a T20 World Cup at home, Pooran remains optimistic about their chances, buoyed by the presence of experienced campaigners and an array of match-winners.
