Marlon Vera, eager for redemption after his initial UFC title pursuit fell short, is gearing up to face former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo in a highly-anticipated showdown.
Multiple sources familiar with the UFC’s intentions revealed to MMA Fighting that Vera is slated to square off against Figueiredo at UFC Abu Dhabi on August 3. Verbal agreements have been secured for this significant 135-pound bout, as initially reported by Ag. Fight.
Both athletes currently share the No. 10 spot in MMA Fighting’s Global Rankings for the bantamweight division.
In his recent outing, Vera suffered a unanimous decision loss to bantamweight titleholder Sean O’Malley at UFC 299 in March. However, he rebounded with a decision victory over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292. Earning him the opportunity to contend for UFC gold. Notably, Vera remains the sole fighter to defeat O’Malley in the UFC.
Figueiredo, a former two-time UFC flyweight champion, has showcased remarkable form since transitioning to the bantamweight division. He secured a dominant decision victory over Rob Font at UFC Austin in December, followed by a second-round submission of former 135-pound champion Cody Garbrandt at April’s unforgettable UFC 300 event.
The UFC Abu Dhabi event will also feature a compelling main event matchup between Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov.
