England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer is set to make his international comeback in England after nearly four years, marking the end of a 382-day absence from professional cricket. Captain Jos Buttler confirmed that Archer, eager to return after a prolonged injury hiatus, will feature against Pakistan at Headingley on Wednesday if weather permits.
Injuries to his back and elbow have limited Archer to just seven matches for England in the past three years, all of which occurred during tours to South Africa and Bangladesh in early 2023. However, Archer has been gradually regaining form by playing for his club Wildey in Barbados and recently bowling a six-over spell for Sussex’s 2nd XI.
Named in England’s provisional 15-man squad for June’s T20 World Cup, Archer has been training diligently, impressing with his pace in the nets. Buttler emphasized the importance of managing expectations for Archer’s return, acknowledging his extended absence from international cricket.
While Buttler confirmed Archer’s participation in Wednesday’s match, he stressed the need to handle the fast bowler with care throughout the four-match series. Despite Archer’s undeniable talent, Buttler emphasized the importance of not overburdening him and allowing him to enjoy his return to cricket.
Harry Brook will also make his return to international cricket after missing England’s Test tour to India due to personal reasons, with Buttler expressing confidence in Brook’s abilities.
With England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott overseeing training, the team aims to break their T20I series drought, as they have not won a series since their World Cup triumph in Australia 18 months ago. Buttler, reflecting on England’s 50-over struggles, emphasized the need to prioritize team decisions and remain focused on the upcoming T20 format.
Despite his personal achievements at the IPL, Buttler remains committed to keeping wicket in the series, although he plans to hand over the gloves to Phil Salt when needed due to his impending family commitments. As Buttler awaits the arrival of his third child, he prioritizes family obligations while maintaining his dedication to cricket.
