Jos Buttler has backed the ECB’s choice to withdraw players from the IPL playoffs to participate in England’s T20I series against Pakistan, expressing his belief that international cricket should not overlap with the world’s premier franchise league.
Buttler, one of eight members of England’s provisional T20 World Cup squad to leave the IPL before the group stage’s conclusion, emphasized the importance of prioritizing national team commitments, especially leading into a major tournament like the World Cup.
While acknowledging his key role at Rajasthan Royals, Buttler noted the necessity of focusing on England duties, leaving a significant void in his IPL team’s lineup for the Eliminator against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Contrary to the ECB’s approach, other cricket boards like West Indies and South Africa have allowed players to fulfill their franchise commitments, resulting in their absence from national team duty. However, Ireland permitted Josh Little to remain in India during their recent series against Pakistan, taking into account the players’ involvement in the IPL.
The decision by the ECB to recall players has stirred some controversy, particularly within the IPL franchises, although it was based on prior agreements and considerations of fitness and international duty.
Sam Curran, who captained Punjab Kings in several matches, echoed Buttler’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of team cohesion and preparation for upcoming tournaments.
The Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA) will address scheduling concerns in an upcoming global symposium, reflecting the players’ overwhelming support for harmonizing international and franchise cricket schedules to avoid conflicts.
