Hampshire Signs Ottniel Baartman for Vitality T20 Blast Matches

Hampshire has secured the services of Ottniel Baartman, the South African fast bowler, for the latter part of their Vitality Blast campaign. Baartman steps in for Naveen-ul-Haq from Afghanistan, who withdrew from the competition due to personal reasons.

Although not yet capped by his national team, the 31-year-old Baartman earned a spot in South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad and is poised to potentially debut during their upcoming series in the West Indies. He previously played under Adi Birrell, Hampshire’s head coach, for Sunrisers Eastern Cape, champions of the SA20 tournament for two consecutive seasons, where he also shared the field with Liam Dawson.

“I’m eagerly anticipating my stint with the Hampshire Hawks for my inaugural foray into county cricket,” Baartman expressed. “Reuniting with Adi Birrell and Liam Dawson, whom I know from the SA20, is exciting for me. I’ve heard glowing reviews about the atmosphere at Utilita Bowl, and I’m eager to showcase my skills in front of the Hawks fans this summer.”

Baartman’s inclusion comes following the departure of Michael Neser, who played in Hampshire’s first eight Blast group matches. He joins Ben McDermott as one of Hampshire’s overseas options. Baartman will be available for six fixtures in July, commencing with the match against Middlesex, and could feature in the knockout stages in September should Hampshire progress.

Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, commented on the signing: “Ottniel’s availability and enthusiasm to join us after the World Cup are fantastic additions to our squad. He fills the role perfectly and brings with him the momentum from an exceptional domestic season in South Africa.”
