In a departure from the high-scoring encounters typical of IPL 2024, the KKR clinched a historic win over the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium, ending a decade-long drought at the venue.
Venkatesh Iyer emerged as the hero for KKR, anchoring their innings with a gritty knock that defied Mumbai’s formidable bowling attack. Supported by Manish Pandey, he propelled KKR to a respectable total of 169 runs, a remarkable feat on a pitch favoring bowlers.
Venky’s innings was nothing short of spectacular, as he showcased his prowess against Mumbai once again, registering his fourth fifty-plus score in five encounters against them. Despite a mid-innings hiccup that saw the departure of Pandey and a critical run-out of Andre Russell, Venky remained undeterred, accumulating vital runs and captivating the crowd with a breathtaking six off Hardik Pandya.
Manish Pandey, making his season debut, proved his worth with a composed 42-run contribution, forming a crucial partnership with Venky to stabilize KKR’s innings after a shaky start. His experience and calm demeanor were instrumental in steering KKR towards a competitive total.

On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav’s valiant effort stood out amidst Mumbai’s batting woes. His classy knock of 56 runs kept MI’s hopes alive momentarily, but his dismissal in the 16th over marked a turning point, leading to a collapse from which MI couldn’t recover.
Despite SKY’s efforts, Mumbai Indians succumbed to their eighth defeat in 11 games, dimming their playoff prospects and leaving them facing an uphill battle in the tournament. In contrast, Kolkata Knight Riders celebrated a memorable victory, buoyed by Venkatesh Iyer’s exceptional performance that overshadowed Mumbai’s efforts.
