Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar addressed the challenging decision to omit Rinku Singh from India’s T20 World Cup squad. Emphasizing that it was one of the most difficult discussions they had.
Rinku Singh, known for his explosive batting, particularly for Kolkata Knight Riders, missed out on selection in favor of Shivam Dube from Chennai Super Kings. Agarkar acknowledged Rinku’s stellar performances but noted that the selection process involved considering various combinations.
Agarkar explained, “It’s probably the toughest thing we have had to discuss. He has done nothing wrong, not even Shubman Gill for that matter. It is not his fault that he missed out. It’s about combinations.”
Despite Rinku’s exclusion from the main squad, he was named among the reserves, indicating how close he was to securing a spot in the final 15.
While Rinku hasn’t had an exceptional IPL season this year, Agarkar highlighted his past contributions and expressed confidence in his abilities. However, the selectors opted for other players based on the team’s requirements and strategies for the T20 World Cup.
After the press conference, India’s captain Rohit Sharma had a conversation with Rinku, indicating his support and encouragement for the player despite the setback.
Abhishek Nayar, the head of KKR Academy and assistant coach of the franchise, also defended Rinku’s form. Emphasizing the importance of the runs he has scored for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL this season.
