The Melbourne Renegades, former champions of the Big Bash League (BBL), have announced the dismissal of their head coach David Saker, despite him having a year remaining on his contract. Saker’s tenure with the team began in 2021, and the upcoming BBL 2024-25 season would have been his fourth. However, the team’s performance has been inconsistent, with finishes at the bottom of the league table in recent seasons.
Since their BBL win in the 2018-19 season under Andrew McDonald’s coaching, the Renegades have struggled, finishing poorly in subsequent seasons. Saker’s appointment in 2021 failed to bring significant improvements, with the team finishing eighth for three consecutive seasons. Despite a brief resurgence in the 2022-23 season, the Renegades’ performance remained underwhelming in the most recent BBL season (2023-24).
Looking to revamp their squad for the upcoming season, the Renegades are in the midst of a coaching change. They’ve also made a key signing to bolster their batting lineup: opener Josh Brown from Brisbane Heat. Brown’s impressive performance in the previous BBL season has garnered attention, and the Renegades hope he will form a strong partnership with young talent Jake Fraser-McGurk.
